Michigan State University has, through written operational plans, adopted the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and its primary method of operation, the Incident Command System (ICS) as the operating principal in times of emergency and disaster. ICS allows multiple and diverse responding agencies to coordinate, communicate and cooperate during a disaster response. All MSU police officers have received training in the ICS method.
Michigan State University also has established an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) which is staffed by key University Administrative personnel during a disaster or major emergency. The primary purpose of the EOC operation is to provide support and direction to the response units in the field. This EOC is equipped to operate for extended periods of time and under harsh conditions. University personnel have been pre-identified and trained to full the basic functional areas of Command, Operations, Planning, Logistics, and Finance. Additional units provide Communication and Policy direction.
