Pest Management |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The
function of the Pest Management section is to provide Michigan State University
with safe and healthy pest free surroundings. To ensure that insect and/or
animal carried pathogens do not effect the human environment, pests are
kept to the lowest possible levels. A routine inspection is performed on
all University buildings and grounds as well as agricultural areas, satellite
farms, and research stations throughout the state. The Pest Management section
uses a Human Systems Pest Management approach for the benefit of the safety
and public health of faculty, staff, students, and visitors of Michigan
State University. Human systems pest management is the process that utilizes
regular monitoring to determine if and when a treatment is needed. It employs
sanitation surveys, physical, mechanical, cultural, chemical, biological,
and educational programs to prevent pest populations from reaching any level
of annoyance or damage. In consideration of public health, chemicals are
not the first choice for solving a pest problem. When required, target-specific,
low impact treatments are employed. Pesticide treatments are not made according
to a predetermined schedule. They are made only when and where monitoring
has indicated that the pest will cause a threat to public safety or result
in unacceptable economic, medical or aesthetic damage. The human systems
pest management approach results in an environmentally, socially, and economically
efficient means to keep pests below an economic threshold level that meets
current public expectations.
A constant working relationship is maintained between the Pest Management section and the Public Health section within the department. This communication furthers the effectiveness of interrelated work in the areas of sanitation and public health, in addition to benefiting the MSU community through educational programs. A close association is sustained with University Housing, Academic, and Agriculture areas to provide quality, thorough pest management services. The Pest Management section complies with all applicable University, State, and Federal regulations.
